MetaMask breaks off from Consensys
Consensys announced Sept. 9 it will split into two independent companies by the end of 2026. The existing Consensys Software Inc. will rebrand as MetaMask, keeping the consumer wallet (100M+ downloads) and its push into payments, savings and investing under Joe Lubin as chairman and CEO. A new entity retaining the Consensys name will take the institutional infrastructure and protocols business, including Linea, led by CEO Mike Kriak and President David Cunningham with Lubin as executive chairman. The announcement said nothing about IPO or token plans; Consensys had previously pushed its IPO target to fall 2026 and did not respond to CoinDesk on whether that still holds.
Bessent leans on Senate ahead of CLARITY Act vote
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged senators on Sept. 9 to advance the CLARITY Act (H.R. 3633), warning that inaction would signal "that America is unwilling to lead on the future of digital assets." The Senate takes up a procedural motion to proceed on Tuesday, Sept. 15, which needs 60 votes; Republicans hold 53 seats. Senate Republicans released revised text Sept. 10 addressing DeFi registration and ethics provisions, though the dispute over ethics rules covering presidents and their families remains unresolved. The bill passed the House and cleared Senate Banking 15-9 in May.
U.S. Bank runs live USBDC stablecoin on Stellar
U.S. Bank said Sept. 9 it completed a live cross-border payment using USBDC, its own dollar-backed stablecoin, between North American and European entities on the Stellar network, validating minting, redemption, freeze and clawback functions on its internally built Digital Asset Platform. CEO Gunjan Kedia said the pilot shows the bank can "accelerate global cash management" within the banking system. U.S. Bank and the Stellar Development Foundation are now exploring liquidity management, collateral mobility and cross-border treasury use cases.

Sacred Waste Joins Team Streams
The team from Sacred Waste appeared in Hemi streams this week. Sacred Waste is a proof-of-burn protocol that recycles dead tokens into block rewards on its waste chain. The team is closing in on one million transactions, at which point it will announce its TGE date, and it is currently building a Hemi pit, with a collaboration around Hemi Arcade in the works. The Sacred Waste team also joined Protocol Engineering Office Hours the following day. On the Hemi marketing side, the BrownFi campaign continues and incentivized pools are still open, recent Built on Hemi streams featured Algebra and BrownFi and are available on X, and partner announcements are landing this week on the blog and on X. Updated circulating supply information is also being submitted to CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap, with some of it already out and the rest going out this week.
Hemi Arcade Updates
Hemi Arcade 2 Turbo Edition is live. Builders have until October 27 to submit, with the judging livestream and happy hour set for Thursday, October 29. Prizes are allocated across five categories, entries are capped at two per person or team, and teams are encouraged, including reaching out to Hemi's creatives for game assets. Horror-themed games are especially welcome heading into October, though not required, and puzzle games remain the judging panel's self-admitted weak spot. Games will be played and judged in a desktop web browser, so mobile versions are a nice addition but not part of the criteria.
Engineering Updates
On the engineering front, work continues on the op-reth upgrade in support of the upcoming Glamsterdam hard fork, alongside the new ZK provability features being built into it. Updated node releases for testnet operators are coming ahead of the September 21 testnet activation, with mainnet releases to follow. Max also previewed a significant redesign of the Hemi staking system, spanning both the interface and the economic model behind it, including new reward sources and a reworked, rebranded veHEMI staking interface; details are being finalized and should be shared soon.
